Traces of the Ottoman period were found during excavations in the ancient city of Kaunos
In the excavations carried out in the ancient city of Kaunos, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, structures and materials from the Ottoman period are being unearthed.
Visitors who make a journey of about 10 minutes by tour boats to reach the ancient city of Kaunos, located in Köyceğiz Çandır neighbourhood, reach the entrance of the 3,000-year-old ancient city after walking for about 15 minutes on the tree-covered road.
The 3,000-year-old Kaunos Ancient City, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, has 2,400-year-old rock tombs, a 5,000-seat theatre, basilica, baths, agora, sanctuaries, temples and churches, and 1300-year-old mosaics, which are a centre of attraction for both local and foreign tourists.
In the Archaic walled monastery area, where excavation works in the ancient city are mainly carried out this year, most of the materials and structures encountered for the first time in the city are unearthed.
